“Conservatism is s a political and social philosophy that promotes retaining traditional institutions and supports, at most, minimal and gradual change in society.” – Wikipedia

This term is a word that is often thrown around during election times or when it comes to new policies being put in place. As a Christian I understand the importance of being a Conservative when it comes to oneself; however, it does not work for others. Society is not made up of a homogeneous mixture of people. Society is in fact made up of multiple cultures. I cringe at the thought of people who follows this philosophy  looking down upon those that don’t. It actually seems like in some instances that these are the same people who are the most hypocritical. Allow me to explain.

When it comes to politics the sanctity of marriage, different policies that can be viewed as Socialist, and the right of freedom of religion can’t even be successfully debate by the modern Christian and here is why. The Christian church emphasizes true love and finding the one that God has made for you. This is not wrong, but it doesn’t make any sense. During the times that the Bible was written, marriages were arranged by the parents. There was also a whole different system that consummated a marriage. During those times it could’ve been a ceremony or a donation of livestock to the bride’s father. These days a marriage is signified by a legal document. That is not traditional by any means. It’s like over time the church has tried to replace certain elements with courtship or even making the woman less than a man. The sanctity becomes an argument when gay rights are presented. Yes, the Bible does say that he who finds a wife finds a good thing. The Bible also said that the greatest commandment was love. All heterosexual marriages aren’t based on love so who is to say what is sanctified and what is not?

Many Republicans and Christians look down upon government aid. From what I understand the Bible speaks about giving to the poor. I think even Jesus spoke about if a man steals because he is hungry then to let him have that. How can you believe that we are supposed to help the poor, but think that the government shouldn’t? Doesn’t that weaken your argument? Lastly freedom of religion should be honored. The part about this is when Christians think that they should have freedoms, but other religions shouldn’t. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Christianity has 100’s if not 1,000’s of denominations within itself which shows a lack of unity. If Christians can’t even be in one accord, then what makes them think that they should be surprised about certain rights being taken from them? It’s like the Bible has been picked apart to tailor to their needs.

In conclusion, Conservatism does not work for the masses. Most of us can’t even agree to disagree. For the sake of staying true to oneself, and doing what is best for most people it is better to be moderate if not liberal. That’s all I gotta say.
